  • What are parabens and why shouldn't you use them?

Parabens in cosmetic use are chemical products that are used as preservatives in the vast majority of personal hygiene items such as facial creams, shampoos, body gels, among others, in order to prevent bacteria, fungi and others from being generated in them microorganisms thus allowing them not to spoil and last longer. Seen in this way, they "do good" to these products by ensuring their perfect condition, but in people, such preservatives can be harmful to health.

According to a study by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), if the amounts of parabens in cosmetics do not exceed 25%, there is no risk to health. But let's think that from our first days of life, we were showered with soaps and shampoos that contained this chemical. That is, over many years, we have broken a record with that percentage, we have insatiably surpassed it with the continuous use of products with this preservative which, in small quantities, does not harm, but the sum of these small quantities generates contamination in the organism. So it is worth asking what we expose ourselves to if we continue to use them.

- Parabens can cause irritation and redness of the skin, also dermatitis.

- It was verified by a study that there was the presence of parabens in samples of breast cancer tumors.

- Some can alter the hormonal balance of the body, that is, they act as endocrine disruptors which hinder the action of human hormones to the point of being able to cause cancer in women or, the decrease in fertility in men.

- They can affect pregnancy and babies under three years of age.

- Parabens react to UVB radiation by increasing the production of free radicals causing premature aging of the skin and deterioration of DNA. In addition, when these tissues are damaged, they can turn into cancer cells.

When the river sounds, because it carries stones and this controversial issue is not current. There is little scientific evidence that supports the above theories, but when in doubt, we have begun to change our lifestyle by acquiring beauty products with natural preservatives and another large sector uses products without any type of chemicals, completely natural. Also, let's think that every day we apply deodorant, perfumes, bath gel, and if you wash your hair daily, shampoo. The sum of each percentage of parabens that all these cosmetics contain, using them daily, it is impossible that it does not affect our health. Take a good look at this hypothesis.

It should be noted that in countries such as Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, they are prohibited from using this component in the production of cosmetics as a result of resolution 1905 issued by the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), issued on February 27, 2017.

On the labels of conventional cosmetics, parabens can be identified with the English names methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, benzylparaben and that ultimately act as insecticides so that creams, shampoos, gels and other cosmetics are not invaded by fungi , bugs and bacteria.
